Old Garden Vineyard Mourvèdre
Wine
Hewitson Old Garden Vineyard Mourvèdre draws from an ancient vineyard of Mourvèdre planted in 1853. Having survived floods, fires and the worldwide spread of Phylloxera, it is the oldest known planting of the variety.
Just eight rows of these unique vines grow at Rowland Flat in the Barossa Valley. The secret to their longevity is their extremely deep roots, reaching 10 metres into the soil.
Most of the fruit is crushed, with around 20% left as whole bunches. It is cold soaked for one week before fermentation. The juice remains on skins for a further three weeks, receiving remontage (pumping over).
Once pressed, the wine matures for 18 months in new French oak barrels.
Crimson red, Hewitson Old Garden Vineyard Mourvèdre is a full bodied wine with lush, dense dark fruits, hints of spice and finely integrated tannins. Cellaring potential is 15 years.
